The Korean studies minor is an interdepartmental and interdisciplinary program that allows students to explore and deepen their interest in and knowledge of Korea. Korean studies at UC San Diego places special emphasis on modern Korea as a transnational formation, exploring how Korea has been shaped and has constructed itself under changing historical circumstances and in relation to other nation-states, empires, and their histories and cultures. Course offerings for the minor include the disciplines of history, literature, and language; culture and popular culture studies; gender and sexuality studies; music; political science; international relations; and globalization studies. The program comprises two broad categories: (1) courses on Korea and (2) Korea-related courses. The first category of courses automatically count toward the minor, while the second category of courses needs to be petitioned through the Korean Studies Program. Please consult with the program coordinator regarding Korea-related courses, Education Abroad Program courses, and other transfer credits.

The Korean Studies Minor Program requires that students complete a total of twenty-eight units of Korea and/or Korea-related courses. Normally twenty-eight units add up to seven courses, if each course is a four-unit course. If courses taken offer fewer than four units each, then more than seven courses are needed to fulfill the minor requirement of twenty-eight units.

Students can take a maximum of three lower-division courses; however, the Minor Program does not require lower-division courses. All twenty-eight units can be upper-division courses. Students are not required to take language courses, but we strongly recommend that students take language courses as part of their overall specialization in Korea.

Please keep in mind that the approved list of courses is divided into two categories: Korea courses (100 percent Korea content) and Korea-related courses (less than 100 percent Korea content). Students need to petition to use Korea-related courses and courses where topics vary.

All of the lower- and upper-division courses must be taken for a letter grade.
